About True Cinnamon from Sri Lanka
True cinnamon, sold worldwide as Ceylon cinnamon, is the dried inner bark of Cinnamomum zeylanicum. The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) describes the tree as indigenous to Sri Lanka. The bark is peeled, rolled into quills and cured, and EDB notes that preparing cinnamon quills involves a combination of art and skill unique to Sri Lanka. A true cinnamon quill is made of many thin layers of bark rolled tightly together, and it is light tan in colour. Cassia, which is often sold as cinnamon, is a thicker, darker, single layer of bark.
EDB states that Ceylon cinnamon is categorised into four major grades, Alba, Continental, Mexican and Hamburg, based on the diameter of the quill. The name Ceylon cinnamon is registered in the European Union as a Protected Geographical Indication under Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022/144. According to EDB, the indication covers cinnamon quills, cinnamon powder, cinnamon leaf oil and cinnamon bark oil, and use of the PGI mark is limited to members of the Association for Ceylon Cinnamon Protected Geographical Indication.
The items listed in this category are quills in the grades Alba, C5 Special, C5 and C4 (Continental), M5 and M4 (Mexican) and H1 and H2 (Hamburg). Quillings, featherings, chips, cinnamon powder, cinnamon leaf oil and cinnamon bark oil are also listed. All are listed as available on request. They are standard Sri Lankan export products described from official sources, and a listing is not a statement of stock. A quotation follows your enquiry.

What is the difference between Ceylon cinnamon and cassia?
Ceylon cinnamon is the bark of Cinnamomum zeylanicum. Its quills are built from many thin layers rolled together and are light tan. Cassia comes from other Cinnamomum species and is usually sold as a thick, hard, darker single layer of bark.
Is Ceylon cinnamon a protected name in the European Union?
Yes. The name is registered as a Protected Geographical Indication under Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022/144 of 2 February 2022. EDB explains who may use the PGI mark. Both pages are in the sources for this category.
What are the main grades of Ceylon cinnamon?
EDB lists four major grades based on quill diameter: Alba, Continental, Mexican and Hamburg. The EU single document for the indication notes that Continental and Mexican have sub-grades, so state the exact grade you need in your quote request.
How do I ask for a cinnamon quote?
Email us from the Contact page or the How to order page and state the form (quills, quillings, featherings, chips, powder or oil), grade, quantity, pack size, destination port and the documents you need. The items are listed as available on request, and a quotation follows your enquiry.
