Product Overview

Ceylon cinnamon quills are made in Sri Lanka from the bark of Cinnamomum zeylanicum. The peeled bark is rolled and joined into long quills. The Department of Export Agriculture says the other pieces of bark are sold as chips, quillings or featherings. The Department of Cinnamon Development describes featherings as small pieces that break off from cinnamon bark when cinnamon quills are made. They may contain up to 10% chips by weight, and other extraneous substances should not exceed 2%. Featherings have their own line in the export tariff of Sri Lanka, H.09.06.11.94. The Department names featherings, with quillings and chips, as raw material for cinnamon bark oil. The Department of Export Agriculture notes that a drink made by immersing pieces of bark in hot water is popular in Latin American countries.
