Lemongrass Oil

Lemongrass is grown for its oil. The Department of Export Agriculture says two types are common in Sri Lanka: Cymbopogon flexuosus, the commercial lemongrass used for distillation, and Cymbopogon citratus, known as Sera. It reports lemongrass in the Badulla and Hambantota areas and notes that only a few small cultivations exist today, so supply is limited. The grass is cut, wilted in the field for about two days and distilled with water. The department says oil quality is guided by citral content and solubility in alcohol. For Cymbopogon flexuosus oil the citral content should be higher than 75% and the oil should dissolve in 70% ethyl alcohol. The oil is used mainly in perfumery, and in detergents and deodorising compounds. Lemongrass oil is listed here as available on request, and packaging is available on request.
