Product Overview

Areca nut is the fruit of the areca palm, Areca catechu. The Department of Export Agriculture says it is grown largely in the wet zone and the wetter part of the intermediate zone of Sri Lanka. It names Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Ratnapura, Badulla and Matale as the major growing districts, with most palms in home gardens or mixed cultivations. The nut is used both fresh and dried. The department says local areca nuts are round or oval, and that dried areca is known as karunka. In Sri Lanka mature nuts are usually harvested. The main use is chewing with betel leaf across South Asia and parts of South East Asia. In Pakistan and India fresh nuts are also cut and flavoured to make other products.
