Fresh Sri Lankan Bananas

Banana is the most widely cultivated fruit in Sri Lanka, according to the Export Development Board. The board says 29 banana cultivars have been reported in the country. Five of them are cooking types and most of the others are dessert types. Popular varieties it names include Kolikuttu, Seeni, Aanamalu, Rath Kesel and Kandula. Dessert bananas are eaten raw or processed as fruit. Cooking varieties, known as green banana or plantain, are fried, boiled, roasted or baked as a vegetable. The board also describes processed forms: puree for bakery items, drinks and dairy desserts, juice, flour and banana chips made by frying slices of unripe banana. The lowland dry and wet zones grow both sweet and sour banana types. Fresh bananas are listed here as available on request, and packaging is available on request.
